Unemployment Benefits Survey

Congress passed important bipartisan legislation, the CARES Act, which includes enhanced unemployment measures, including:

Expanding Unemployment Benefits to More Americans: This legislation expands unemployment to previously ineligible groups including the self-employed, gig workers, independent contractors, and workers with irregular work history.

More Money for a Longer Period of Time: This legislation provides an additional $600/week payment to each recipient of unemployment insurance. It also provides an additional 13 weeks of unemployment benefits for those who remain unemployed after state unemployment benefits are expended.

However, despite the significant level of federal support that has been provided to South Carolina’s Department of Employment and Workforce, many South Carolinians have had difficulty accessing aid at that the time it is needed most. I know that these difficulties have been incredibly frustrating for South Carolinians whose lives have been upended by the COVID-19 crisis.

That’s why I want to continue to hear from you to get a greater understanding of the problems you are facing in this economic and public health crisis. I will use this information to call on state leaders and agencies to accelerate and target improvements to the system so you can get the relief you need as soon as possible.

Thank you for your input.
