Rep. Cunningham Statement on President Trump’s State of the Union Address

Press Release

Tonight, Congressman Joe Cunningham released the following statement following President Trump’s State of the Union address:

“President Trump’s call for unity was welcome news and I sincerely hope this message of bipartisanship will be more than just words. I am glad that he addressed two key priorities for the Lowcountry – infrastructure investment and lowering the cost of healthcare by making prescription drugs more affordable. The Lowcountry needs a substantial investment in infrastructure to improve our roads, bridges, flooding problems, and evacuation routes. I stand ready to work with the President and Congressional Republicans to rebuild our nation’s ailing infrastructure.”

“I am deeply concerned by the President’s announcement he would be asking Congress for more authority to impose tariffs. President Trump’s trade war is already doing real and serious damage to the Lowcountry’s economy. I plan on introducing legislation shortly that would bring more congressional oversight to important trade decisions. I am also concerned that President Trump did not once address the serious threat of climate change.”

“Going forward, I intend to continue to put Lowcountry over party and work with President Trump when he puts forward policies that will help the Lowcountry. I will also continue to voice my objections when his plans would hurt the Lowcountry, especially if the Administration continues to pursue dangerous and unwanted offshore drilling and seismic airgun blasting.”
