Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Joe Cunningham issued the following statement in support of the bipartisan and bicameral government funding deal:

“Let me be completely clear, another government shutdown is absolutely unacceptable. I have said from the very beginning that both sides would need to come together and compromise and I applaud the bipartisan group for doing just that. While this deal is not perfect, it ensures our borders are secure, the federal government remains open and members of the U.S. Coast Guard are paid. I will vote in support of today’s package and am hopeful that we can now swiftly move past this crisis. We must continue to work together to tackle the tough problems facing our country and acknowledge that real governing must mean compromise.”

“I am incredibly concerned by reports that the President will declare a national state of emergency in order to increase border funding, which I believe would set a dangerous precedent. This grave overreach of executive power circumvents the U.S. Constitution and could result in raiding critical funds meant for disaster recovery. I would strongly object to the misappropriation of disaster relief funds designated for the Lowcountry to be used in such a regard.”
