Cunningham Tours Turning Leaf, Charleston Non-Profit Focused on Reducing Recidivism
Mt. Pleasant, S.C. - Rep. Joe Cunningham (SC-01) today toured Turning Leaf, a Charleston non-profit that helps reduce recidivism among formerly incarcerated individuals through job placement, education, and behavioral therapy. Turning Leaf has had incredible success in keeping formerly incarcerated individuals out of prison. Over the last 3.5 years, 60 men have graduated from the program and 80% of them have never been re-arrested. Nationally, only 33% of people are not re-arrested within three years.
“A critically under-looked and underfunded part of our justice system is making sure that folks have the tools necessary to become self-sufficient, functioning members of the community upon completion of their sentence,” said Rep. Joe Cunningham. “I’m thankful for the opportunity today to learn about Turning Leaf’s successes in reducing recidivism and am committed to supporting similar efforts in Congress.”
