Cunningham Holds Listening Session with Lowcountry Educators on Coronavirus Pandemic
2021 school year, Rep. Joe Cunningham (SC-01), hosted a listening session with Lowcountry educators regarding COVID-19’s impact on children and schools. They discussed how to keep children and teachers safe as COVID-19 cases continue to skyrocket in South Carolina, challenges associated with virtual learning, and the additional funding necessary for schools to deal with the impacts of COVID-19.
Cunningham has called on Governor McMaster to implement a statewide mask requirement in order to get the number of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths under control. Cunningham has expressed his concerns over in-person schooling until those numbers decrease.
“I deeply appreciate the opportunity to hear directly from Lowcountry educators as we all grapple with the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic,” said Rep. Joe Cunningham. “Nothing is more important than the safety of our children and teachers. As we make decisions about the upcoming school year, we must listen to teachers and public health experts. I am committed to ensuring our state and local governments, municipalities, and school districts have the funding they need to safely and successfully educate our children.”
“We are thankful when leaders reach out to educators to learn about our challenges and allow us to discuss the expectations that we have in our education system. It takes the community to work together to lift up all children to the heights they can achieve. We thank Congressman Cunningham for being a part of building that community,” said Leanna Rossi-Potter, Teacher - Charleston County School District.
